Permit is the name and Permit is the game.
Unfished waters teaming with schools of Bonefish, the finest Atlantic Ocean fly fishing for Triggerfish I have seen, and, yes, tailing Permit!
A true off-grid adventure on an east coast time zone. It does not get better than that! After a few learning experiences, the logistics are smooth (privado! privado!) and I can't wait to get back to these chaotic waters.
One day in fall 2025, I could not find the fish for a good few hours and then I found hundreds of them. Permit, Bonefish and Jacks were circling the white sand trough behind the turtle grass flats. If I had not seen it with my own eyes, I never would have believed it possible. It may be the only time I have cursed 8lb bonefish stealing the fly. Sure, I have had bones steal the fly from Permit in the Yucatan, but never ones this large!

Fishing
Fishing
Tailing Permit, tailing Triggers and big Bonefish
I have been on the hunt for a fishery like this!
These flats have it all: heavy surfbreak with tailing triggers and parrotfish leading into back reef rubble flats which give way to turtle grass flats and then white sand flats surrounding the interior islands.
My best Permit shots have come in the middle turtle grass flats. (pictured to the right)

Tackle & Technique
Slow action 8wts & 9wts are the needed tools
My go to set up is Hardy ZanePro 9wt with a slightly overweighted floating line. Fluoro tapered leaders (20lb) with 3' of 16lb fluoro tippet added.
Flies: Olive strong arm Merkins in various sizes and weight are my favorite fly for these flats
