Marble Trout Camp

In a land ravaged by past conflicts, regime changes and evolving borders, marble trout fin in emerald water cascading across limestone rocks. Fly fishing for marble trout in Slovenia should be on every anglers bucket list. At the foot of the Julian Alps lays the finest on-foot fly fishing in Europe.

It is easy to lose oneself in the beauty of the scenery, but make no mistake, the fishing is seriously good.

Marble trout are endemic to the Adriatic basin and call the Soca Valley home. Rainbows, browns and grayling also swim these waters and provide great sport for willing anglers.

Anglers will fish for the first few days under the expert guidance of Lesly Janssen and then fish on their own. For the physically fit and interested, guided days with Lesly can entail full day mountain hikes into fly fishing paradise. Many of the photos here are from one of those special and strenuous days.

The fishing season runs from mid April to late October. Camps are usually scheduled for early May and late September.

Fishing

The finest trout fishing

Slovenia is sight fishing at its finest. It does not get better than fishing the emerald waters of the Soca Valley on foot.

In 2013, I saw a photo of the Soca River. A single photo. By May 2014, I was there. My first international fly fishing trip. I managed to win a study abroad scholarship to help fund the trip and spent a week roaming the Soca and its tributaries before taking a train to Vienna to start my studies.

The trip was life changing to say the least. I returned to Slovenia in 2015 after college graduation. The perfect trip  before I started full time work. By 2017, I was out of investment banking and ready to pursue fishing full time. Blame the emerald waters of Slovenia.

 Tackle & Technique

Tackle & Technique

9' 4wts - 6wts are the needed tools.

Precision is the name of the game. Casting skill is a massive benefit when picking apart the clear water. Dry flies are our favorite tactic but often conditions require sub surface presentation.

Please note that regulations require single hook, barbless fishing. No split shot, no hopper droppers, no triple nymph set ups. Wool indicators are allowed but thats it. Leave your Air-Locks at home nymph bros!

Streamer fishing can be effective on the main river.
