Bonefish Camp - The Film

Writer's picture: Austin KaneAustin Kane

Fly fishing for Bonefish in the Caribbean has been a passion of mine for nearly a decade now. I think it is the most elevated form of angling possible. It is art and science, hunting and luck. And a great way to spend a week or two away from the cold winter!

The first ever Kaniak trip was for bonefish in the Caribbean so it is fitting that Bonefish Camp became a formal work of art.

My college roommate, Chris Freiberg, pivoted from a successful music career to documentary filmmaking a couple years ago and we have been looking for a chance to collaborate ever since. Fortunately, the calendars aligned for December 2023 and we sketched out a plan which included the immensely talented John McDonald joining to capture photos.

Chris worked his tail off and learned first hand just how tough wading the flats, creeks and oceanside all day can be. I didn't envy the weight of camera gear he was carrying! And like most first-time tropical waders, Chris learned quickly to lighten his load to just the essentials.

While capturing hours and hours of footage (scenery, fishing, stalking, paddling, at the house, in the car, and even interviews) is one thing, it truly all comes down to the editing skills with a project like this. And, my gosh, did Chris excel there!

Thanks for taking the time to check this film out. I am biased but i think it is well worth the 13 minutes! Best viewed on a large screen with the volume up. (Adjust settings to view in 4K for maximum enjoyment).

If you are keen to experience the joy and on-foot thrill of Bonefish Camp, please get in touch. The next trips will take place May 3-10, 2025 and mid-December 2025.
