Saltwater Fly Fishing

Bonefish Camp

The water is skinny, the bonefish are big, and the best conch burgers in the Caribbean are just down the street. A comfortable but rustic screened-in cabin overlooks a creek system with miles and miles of wadeable flats.

An annual favorite for most Kaniak’s, these trips fill up fast. Bonefish Camps cap out at 6 anglers. Experienced anglers will relish the chance to fish from dawn to dusk and shots at double digit bones. Novice bonefish flyfisher’s will welcome the robust pre-trip education, frequent chances at fish and the company and knowledge of the tour leader and fellow anglers.

Local skiff guiding is available. Direct flights from Miami and Atlanta provide easy access. The season runs from October to April.

Trips are 7 nights and 6 fishing days, with dates selected for the best tides.

The Fishing

On-foot sight fishing is the name of the game

When bonefishing, casting skills tend to land more fish. However, with on-foot fly fishing, the short game is pertinent. Being able to accurately cast 40 feet in steady wind is much more important than casting 80 feet.

As with any bonefishing location, tidal cycle, and thus water levels, are the critical factor in fishing success. We plan our trips specifically to target our favorite tidal movements.  We have fished these flats for years and have intimate knowledge of the best tides.

Anglers will often fish in pairs, working together to find the most productive areas of a particular flat. Most days begin with paddling kayaks across the creek system to reach the fish. Fishing on foot is certainly the most productive method, but it helps to keep your kayaks close by for efficient relocation.

Physical effort is generally rewarded, with anglers often traveling 5 or more miles in a given day.

Accomodations

Packages starting at $3,290 (double occupancy)

A comfortable but rustic screened-in cabin overlooks a creek system with miles and miles of wadeable flats.

Accommodations include a full kitchen (stove, refrigerator, etc), electricity, shower and toilet, and comfortable beds and couches. Plan to shower quickly as all water comes from the sky and is stored on location in a cistern.

Tackle & Technique

7wt - 9wts are the needed tools

Plan to bring a couple of rods in the 7wt - 9wt range. A 7wt is a wonderful rod for low wind days, particularly on slick calm mornings. A sturdy 8wt or 9wt is needed for when the wind picks up, which is nearly every day. Plan to use weight forward, tropical floating lines to match the rods and 200 yards of 20 lb backing on a large arbor reel with a quality drag.

Our favorite 7wt set up is a Sage Ignitor 790-4 paired with a SA infinity WF7F line on a Ross Evolution R Salt 7/8. Our favorite 8wt set up is a Hardy Zane Pro 890-4 paired with a SA Bonefish WF8F line on a Ross Evolution R Salt 7/8.
